This product is DESIGNED to be used without any timing retard input at all... however, every car is a little different, so the knob is there to "fine tune" the timing curve a little bit.
In most cases, you should require no more than 3 to 4 clicks from minimum to bring the timing curve in line.
If you need more than this, you have one of two problems: your environment is whacked or your current fuel tuning is whacked... or both !!!

Thanks JRCivic. I'm going to have to revisit my setup again, it appears that I may be whacked http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/eek.gif because I got audible detonation at 8 clicks, and operate at the mid point based on the instructions and no audible detonation, but I didn't get much of anything out of installing the BTC.
